Common Auto Accidents

For many years, minivans have been one of the most popular vehicles for American families. The low stance, adjustable seating, and large cargo capacity make these versatile vehicles ideal for families. Because minivans are heavily marketed as family vehicles and often tout kid-friendly features, families may erroneously believe that these are among the safest vehicles on our roads. However, while minivan safety has dramatically improved in the last decade, these vehicles often pose a number of serious safety risks in the event of an auto accident. Minivan drivers should educate themselves on the common flaws and defects in minivan design that may threaten their safety and that of their passengers.

Minivan Safety Concerns

Like other family-friendly vehicles such as SUVs and vans, minivans have a narrow wheel base and high center of gravity that make them prone to rollover in the event of an accident. During a minivan rollover, victims are often subjected to roof crush, and many also sustain injuries because of defective seatbelts and airbag malfunction. Another design flaw that can contribute to rollover accident injuries is faulty latches on the minivan sliding door, which can come open during an impact and cause occupant ejection.

One of the most widely known safety flaws in minivan design is poor rear visibility. The box-like shape of minivans creates a significant blind spot in most models and can make driving in reverse and shifting lanes very dangerous. Tragically, a number or wrongful death lawsuits have been filed by families whose children have been unwittingly backed over by minivan drivers.

After a Minivan Accident

When minivan accidents can be traced to design and manufacturing defects, victims may be able to hold negligent auto manufacturers accountable. If your accident was caused by another driver's negligence, you may also be able to hold this party accountable. While no amount of money can erase the traumatic effects of a serious minivan accident, victims may be compensated for damages such as medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages, and more.  If you or someone you love has been injured in a minivan accident, contact an experienced personal injury attorney to review your case as soon as possible.
