Common Causes of Car Accidents

Anyone who has driven on the nation's roads and highways knows that there are many causes of car accidents. One of the newer common causes for car accidents is distractions such as talking and texting on cell phones.

Cell Phone Use

Cell phone use is one of the main causes of car accidents in the United States. This is due to the fact that texting is common when driving, and drivers try to talk on cell phones while driving. Talking on a cell phone is legal in many states while driving, but in places such as California and Indiana, you must have a hands free device in order to do this. If you do not use a hands free device when talking on a cell phone while driving, you can be ticketed and receive a hefty fine in certain states.

Young Drivers

Young drivers make up a large portion of licensed drivers in America. The fact that many of these young drivers do not have much experience on the road in different conditions accounts for a significant percentage of all car accidents. Experts believe that young drivers get distracted with too many things going on inside the vehicle to pay attention and react properly to the actions outside the vehicle. It is best to leave the radio off and turn off cell phones while driving with a young driver. Many states require that any driver 18 or younger must be off the roads before sunset, and always be in the presence of a licensed adult when driving. This is to help young drivers become more experienced on the road under safer conditions.

Road Conditions

Road conditions are another common cause of car accidents. Snow, black ice, heavy rain and fog are some of the worst road conditions drivers can encounter on the road. For snow and black ice, all states have plows and ice control measures, but road conditions themselves are not the problem. Many drivers drive faster than they should for road conditions.
